Local Business Keeps Trucks on Road Around the Globe
WHEELING – Motorists driving past Centre Market may not realize that a fourth-generation family-owned business marketing products to nations such as Poland, Chile, Peru, Greece and the United Kingdom is just down the street.
Such is the case for Ron and Chad Remp, the father and son team now in charge of Wheeling Truck Center Inc., located at the corner of 23rd and Market streets. The Remp family has been marketing Volvo trucks and parts in the Friendly City since 1933. The family believes this makes it the oldest continuing Volvo truck dealer in North America.
“We have sold parts into 93 different countries. A lot of local people don’t realize we are here because most of our dealings are with people around the world,” Ron Remp, who serves as the company’s president, said.
“When I travel to South America, pretty much everyone knows where Miami is. But they have no idea where West Virginia is,” added Chad Remp, the company’s operations manager. “If we can get the product to Miami, they know how to get it from there.”
Now, the Remps will have the honor of serving on the National Board of Directors of the American Truck Dealers. During the American Truck Dealers 51st annual Convention and Exposition in New Orleans in January, members elected Chad Remp to serve as national chairman to American Truck Dealers NextGen.
NextGen is designed for recent graduates of ATD’s Dealer Academy or Next Generation Truck dealers under the age of 45. Ron Remp has served on the board for several years as the nation’s Volvo representative.
The Remps believe they will be the first father and son team to serve on the board at the same time.
“It will be fun to serve on the board together,” Ron Remp said. “The board addresses issues that affect truck dealers across the country.”
“It will be nice to serve with my dad,” Chad Remp said.
