Runaway Truck Crashes Through Neighborhood
A dump truck carrying dirt tore through a garage and several yards Monday afternoon near Pine Avenue after the truck’s brakes went out while traveling along U.S. 250.
According to officers from the Moundsville Police Department, the driver of the truck from HLC Trucking Company in Powhatan Point was moving dirt from a site near Cameron when it lost the brakes and crashed at about 1:30 p.m.
Neighbors gathered to see the path the truck had marked from U.S. 250 to the end of Kanawha Street, a distance several hundred yards long.
The truck’s path destroyed a garage and flattened several fences. Police reported a vehicle in the garage was also damaged during the incident.
Moundsville police reported the wet ground in the yards caused by rainfall helped to slow the truck down and possibly saved the driver’s life. The driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to Ohio Valley Medical Center. No one else was hurt in the accident.
Police said the West Virginia Department of Transportation will have to evaluate the vehicle before law enforcement takes action on citing the driver or the company.
Moundsville Police Department, Moundsville Fire Department and the WVDOT responded to the scene.
The truck was towed to Middle Creek Garage.
