Schau Facing Multiple Charges

Ohio County Senior Status Magistrate Howard Carpenter set bond at $2,000 Thursday for William Schau Jr., who is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of marijuana and three other charges stemming from a traffic stop.

A criminal complaint states that at 11:36 p.m. Wednesday, Wheeling police officer Ken Prager followed a van driven in the 3700 block of Wood Street. The van appeared to traveling at a high rate of speed and ran through a stop sign at 37th and Wood streets.

After stopping the vehicle, the driver identified himself as Phillip Schau of Ohio.

The report states dispatch told Prager that Phillip Schau had a valid Ohio operator’s license, listing Schau as being 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing 440 pounds and having brown hair and brown eyes.

“The driver of the vehicle was nowhere close to 440 pounds,” the report states.

Prager searched the vehicle and found a loaded 25 mm automatic pistol and an additional magazine containing six rounds between the driver’s seat and the center console.

The search also revealed a brown bag containing five individually wrapped plastic bags containing a total of six grams of marijuana.

Police then found a wallet with a suspended Ohio driver’s license in the name of William Edward Schau Jr. Schau, 32, of 3709 Wood St., Wheeling, admitted he was the man identified on the suspended operator’s license.

In addition to the gun and marijuana charges, police charged Schau with driving while suspended, failure to obey a traffic control device and obstructing an officer.
