Local Hospital Honors Doctor

Dr. Catherine Evans, a Wheeling Hospital physician, has been named Family Doctor of the Year by the West Virginia Academy of Family Physicians.

Evans is a family physician and director of the Family Medicine Center at Wheeling Hospital. She was presented the award by Dr. E. Robert Marks during the West Virginia Academy of Family Physicians’ 62nd annual Scientific Assembly, held in April in Charleston.

The Family Doctor of the Year Award honors an outstanding, community-minded family physician who provides compassionate, comprehensive care. Candidates are nominated for their service as role models, professionally and personally, in their communities, to other health care professionals, physicians in training and medical staff.

“Family physicians are hard working and dedicated to patient care. They’re a part of our heritage. For many generations, families have relied on these physicians to take good care of the entire family, from youngsters to seniors. Dr. Evans exemplifies that tradition, and we’re proud of her and her accomplishments,” Ron Violi said, Wheeling Hospital chief executive officer.

Evans received a degree in medical technology from West Liberty State College. She earned her medical degree at West Virginia University and completed her family medicine residency at Wheeling Hospital. She is a faculty member of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Wheeling Hospital. Her practice has been integral to the care of women and children, in the Wheeling area.

Founded in 1948, the WVAFP represents more than 1,000 physicians and medical students statewide. It is the largest medical specialty society devoted solely to primary care. The WVAFP is a chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
