Pair of Meth Labs Found in Village
Bellaire police were kept busy Thursday and Friday after two mobile meth labs were found at homes in the village.
On Thursday, officers with the department, along with the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office and the Neffs Fire Department deactivated the materials removed from a house in the 4200 block of Harrison Street. According to Chief Mike Kovalyk, the home has multiple apartments in it and many individuals – including several children – were at risk.
Kovalyk said he called the Belmont County Drug Task Force, but officers were on another call and unable to respond. He then took the components of the lab and transported them to the Bellaire Police Department to a secure area. He said while the components were active, they did not appear to be volatile.
“There were children in the area, and it is a residential area, so I made the decision to remove the items and reduce the threat,” he said.
Representatives from a decontimination team responded and felt the items, while potentially volatile, were secure. However, Kovalyk was asked to have a fire unit available.
“This is what they do for a living, and they wanted that as a precaution,” he said.
Kovalyk said investigators are reviewing information and have potential suspects believed to be involved with the lab. That investigation is ongoing.
A second mobile lab was found Friday morning at 118 Third Avenue, when officers with the Drug Task Force executed a warrant. The warrant indicated officers were investigating crystal meth being made and sold at the home.
Debbie Kinney, who was in the house at the time, was arrested and charged with child endangerment, tampering with evidence and complicity to manufacturing a meth lab. A handicapped child in the house at the time of the raid was taken from the home and is being cared for by Child Protective Services.
Kinney’s son, William Piper II, fled the scene, and authorities are still searching for him. Further investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Belmont County Drug Task Force.
