Parents Arrested After Child Found Alone in Car With Keys

The Moundsville Police Department arrested two parents Thursday who were allegedly sleeping inside their house while their young child got outside and attempted to start their car’s ignition.

Amanda M. Meyer and Dustin M. McBroom, both of 401 Clinton Ave., were charged with one count each of child neglect creating a risk of injury.

According to the criminal complaint, police responded to the parents’ home at about 7 a.m. Thursday after receiving a call from a woman reporting a small girl was alone and getting into a white vehicle parked on Fourth Street and Clinton Avenue.

Police found the girl inside the car wearing only a diaper. The girl allegedly had the ignition key and was trying to put the key into the car’s ignition.

After taking the girl from the vehicle, officers found the house door open and found Meyer and McBroom asleep in the living room.

Meyer reportedly denied the child had left the house, but later conceded the child must have gotten out after they had fallen asleep.

The complaint states there is usually heavy traffic on Fourth Street in the morning, creating a dangerous situation for the child.

Bond for Meyer and McBroom was set at $5,000 each. A preliminary hearing had not been set for the parents as of Friday.
