Rock Hill Greenhouse Celebrates
Rock Hill Greenhouse, located at 56300 Jordan Run Road in Bellaire, invites everyone out this weekend for Garden Party Weekend. The business is owned and operated by Gary and Christina Pastor, former owners of Bonnie Lane Nursery.
“We have been in the greenhouse and landscape business for about 35 years,” Gary said. Gary worked with his father, Andy Pastor, who did in October at the age 95, for years and claims that was where he got his green thumb.
“Christina and I bought the Bonnie Lane Nursery out in 1989 and started to put a greenhouse up,” Gary said. “We grew to the point of supplying all the Kroger stores from Moundsville to Wintersville, Farm and Fleet, before it became Tractor Supply, Beckers that used to be in Wheeling, and Co-op in Moundsville, as well as several others.”
They sold the business in 2010 due to a health scare. From there they moved to Vermont for a year, but they had a hard time being away from their family and moved back to the Ohio Valley.
“Christina and I just couldn’t stay away from the greenhouse business, so we bought one of Jack’s greenhouses when they went out of business. We put it up last year and found that the business is still great,” Gary said.
Gary also works for Wheeling Jesuit University where he does all of the landscaping, flower gardens, hanging baskets and also put in a raised bed produce garden area for the college. Christina works for WesBanco in Wheeling.
The hours for Rock Hill Greenhouse are 4-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1-6 p.m. on Sundays.
They offer a variety of plants that includes everything planted in jumbo six packs, jumbo 11-inch hanging baskets, 14-inch baskets, 16-inch baskets, 5-inch potted plants. They offer 6-inch potted gereniums, herbs, perennials, and vegetable plants, as well as many different others.
“We carry a really great planting soil called Holy Cow and veggie mix that is great. No chain stores carry these soils,” Gary said. “If someone has hanging baskets or planters and need them planted, they can bring them in, select plants and have them planted. When we had Bonnie Lane Nursery, we grew everything from seeds to plugs. We are growers and nothing is shipped in.”
Hours on Sunday will be extended from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the Garden Party. Rock Hill Greenhouse can be reached at 740-391-9998
