Alex Reed Takes Home Herff Jones Scholarship
The results are in for the second-annual Herff Jones Believe in You Scholarship & Principal’sAward – a program that recognizes student leaders across the country with more than $125,000 in college scholarships – and a 2014 Linsly Schoolgraduate as made this year’s cut.
As a state winner, Alexander Reed from Wheeling, will receive a $2,000 scholarship. The annual program selects a national winner, national finalist and national semifinalist for the top awards of $12,000, $8,500 and $5,000 respectively; in addition, the best nominee in each state earns a $2,000 scholarship to help fund their college education.
Each November, school principals nationwide may nominate one high school senior who demonstrates both academic excellence and strong leadership skills. Nominees are evaluated on the basis of academic performance, standardized test results, work experience, participation in student activities, community service and their response to the essay question, “Please explain how a person believing in you has had a positive impact on your success. What did he/she do and how did it help?”
“Alexander ranks first among all of the students I have known during my 18 years in education. From his diversity of talents, to his core convictions, to his unmatched compassion, Alexander brings a blend of abilities and a fundamental disposition that nearly defies description,” Chad Barnett, headmaster of The Linsly School, said in his nomination.
“Our eight judges with distinguished backgrounds in education were overwhelmed with the quality of candidates this year,” Mike Matt, National Motivational Programs Manager for Herff Jones, said. “Reed and other winners were among the best they’ve ever seen. Herff Jones is proud that the Believe in You Scholarship & Principal’s Award is attracting the best of the best students nationally.”
Reed is bound for Harvard University this coming fall where he plans to study Cell & Molecular Biology.
