Police Warn of IRS Telephone Scam Calls
The Wheeling Police Department has received several calls from residents reporting a telephone scam in which subjects claim to be Internal Revenue Service representatives.
The callers claim the potential victims owes money that can be paid through an online transfer system known as “Green Dot.”
According to the report, the callers have heavy accents and are aggressive to the point of threatening to have the target arrested.
Police said the Federal Trade Commission has a website to report such scams because they originate from outside of the United States. The website is www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov.
