Pair Is Arrested for Driving Backward, Assaulting Trooper

Two Wheeling men were arrested Saturday for allegedly trying to flee police by driving backward up a hill while under the influence and assaulting a state trooper.

James Robert Golein, 27, and Chad Charles Golein, 24, both of 146 E. Bethlehem Blvd., face several misdemeanor charges.

James Golein is charged with DUI second offense, driving without headlights, driving backward and fleeing police in a vehicle. Chad Golein was charged with assault on a police officer and obstructing. Bond was set at $3,500 and $2,500, respectively.

According to the criminal complaint filed against the Goleins, State Police troopers were on patrol at about 11:15 p.m. Saturday near Stulls and Viola Road when they saw a silver pickup truck traveling toward them.

The truck allegedly stopped in the middle of the road suddenly, turned off its headlights and began driving rapidly backward uphill.

Troopers reportedly followed the truck, but it failed to stop.

The complaint states troopers then ordered the driver, James Golein, out of the vehicle at gunpoint and placed him in handcuffs while the vehicle was left in gear and drifting toward the troopers and the cruiser.

Police then ordered Chad Golein out of the car, but he allegedly refused to show troopers his hands and began screaming obscenities from the vehicle.

After being ordered to show his hands several more times, Chad Golein allegedly stuck his hands through the open passenger door window.

He then allegedly approached the troopers, advancing in an aggressive manner.

The complaint states Chad Golein refused to get on the ground and was placed under arrest, but continued to act belligerently.

James Golein reportedly failed three sobriety test and was placed under arrest for DUI second offense.

In a police interview at the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, James Golein told troopers a passerby alerted him to the troopers’ presence in the area.

He said when he saw the police vehicle, he thought he was going to be pulled over and turned his headlights off and tried to run.

A pretrial hearing has not yet been set.
