Woman Arrested in Alleged Dollar Store Embezzlement
Darlene Chalmers of Moundsville was arrested Tuesday for allegedly embezzling more than $2,000 from Dollar General, where she was employed.
According to the criminal complaint filed against Chalmers, 32, of 109 Cedar Ave., the Moundsville Police Department responded to the Dollar General store on First Street on July 9 to a report of a store manager admitting to taking a store bank deposit.
A loss prevention manager at Dollar General reportedly told police a night deposit on July 5 was placed in a store safe but never made it to the bank.
The manager told police Chalmers was one of two employees questioned on the missing deposit, but Chalmers allegedly denied taking the deposit.
The complaint states Chalmers later admitted to taking the money because she had three children, her utilities had been shut off and she needed to buy groceries.
In a police interview, Chalmers allegedly said she took $2,193.95 out of the safe and then left the store. Video surveillance from the store also showed Chalmers taking the deposit out of the safe, putting it into a yellow bag and leaving the store.
Bond was set at $5,000. A preliminary hearing for Chalmers has not been scheduled.
