Chase Ends as Stolen Car Runs Out of Gas

A Wheeling man ran out of luck Monday when the car he had allegedly stolen ran out of gas as he was fleeing from police.

Raymond Cordell Asbury IV, 18, of 367 Virginia Park Road, is being held in the Belmont County Jail on charges of receiving stolen property and failure to comply with an order from a police officer, pending extradition back to West Virginia where he may face additional charges.

Detective Gregg McKenzie said Wheeling police responded to a 2:22 a.m. call to Junior Avenue regarding a vehicle stolen out of the parking lot at CD’s Irish Pub. He said a chase began after officers spotted the vehicle in an area of McColloch and Baker streets.

“He fled through East Wheeling and the downtown district and then on to Interstate 70 west and into Ohio,” McKenzie said. “The car ran out of gas near Exit 220, and the driver exited the car and jumped over a fence in an attempt to flee on foot. Our officers caught him and Belmont County sheriff’s deputies took him into custody.”

According to a Belmont County 911 dispatcher, Asbury was taken to East Ohio Regional Hospital prior to being jailed. Bond is set at $5,000 for the receiving stolen property and $10,000 for the failure to comply.
