New Hancock County Elementary School Ribbon Cutting Set for Sunday

Area residents are invited to join Hancock County school officials and other guests Sunday for the official dedication of the new Weirton Elementary School.

Officials will hold a formal ribbon cutting and dedication program in the school gymnasium beginning at 1 p.m. Principal Frank Carey said visitors will be invited to tour the school following the program.

Built at a cost of $26.6 million funded by a bond levy, the 105,000 square-foot building will provide an education for more than 900 Hancock County elementary students, taking the place of Weirton Heights, Broadview and Liberty elementary schools.

The facility, for students in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade, will feature three separate areas for learning for pre-K and kindergarten, first and second grades and third and fourth grades; two computer labs, 10 laptop labs and five iPad labs. The entire building is wireless, according to Carey, and will feature a state-of-the-art security system as well as a full-time prevention resource officer on site from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

In addition to Carey, Weirton Elementary will be led by Assistant Principals Andrea Dulaney and Derek VanDyke.

Carey said workers are completing some final touches this month, with playgrounds and landscaping set for completion within a few weeks of the school year beginning.

On Monday, the school office will be open for new enrollments, and parents and students are scheduled to visit from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 15 to meet with teachers and become familiar with bus schedules and class routines.

School will open Aug. 20 for students in first through fourth grade, with kindergarten beginning Aug. 27 and Pre-K on Sept. 2.

In anticipation of the school year, the Weirton Police Department also has released the locations of its crossing guards for the year.

Guards will be located at Pennsylvania Avenue and Weir Avenue; Pennsylvania Avenue and Orpha Avenue; County Road and Avenue F; Bright Way and Euclid Avenue; Marland Heights Road and West Street; and Pennsylvania Avenue and Powers Road in the morning and Pennsylvania Avenue and East Bellview in the afternoon.
