Strawberry Festival Yields $2,000 for Soup Kitchen
A local church’s Strawberry Festival has yielded a $2,000 donation for the Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling, along with money for other organizations.
Members of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bethlehem, presented the kitchen, located at 1610 Eoff St., Wheeling, the check Aug. 21, the same day of their weekly efforts to help the agency make lunch for the needy.
In addition to the $2,000 in kitchen money, the church plans to give $1,000 to Youth Services System; $1,700 to Wheeling Health Right; and $100 to Appalachian Outreach for a total of $4,800 in donations.
Church members Minnie Taylor and Marianne McCausland said the church has been holding the festival for the past 42 years with all proceeds going to charities.
Held in June, the festival offers patrons a plate heaped with strawberries, cake and ice cream.
The kitchen has an annual budget of $350,000 that consists mainly of donations from individuals and groups.
Workers and volunteers served 130,000 meals there last year.
