Helping Heroes to Host Blood Drive Thursday in Moundsville

Inspired by the need for blood donations after the June 12 mass shooting in Orlando, Fla., staff members of a Moundsville veteran’s organization are planning a blood drive to assist former servicemen and women in need.

Helping Heroes will host the blood drive from 2-7 p.m. Thursday at the American Legion Post 3 in Moundsville. Central Blood Bank of Pittsburgh will coordinate the event.

Participating donors will receive patriotic Helping Heroes T-shirts, and $1 will be given to the Moundsville organization for every unit of blood that is donated.

According to Helping Heroes program manager John Martin, the proceeds will help develop the organization’s mission to extend services to more veterans in the community, through home visits and more. He added the organization is always in need of food, hygiene materials and more during the summer months.

According to Martin, appointments for Thursday’s blood drive are preferred, but walk-ins are also welcome. Interested parties can sign up using group code C053 at www.centralbloodbank.org/donorpass.asp or by calling Rachel Bennett at 412-736-5506.

Helping Heroes will also host a benefit poker run at the Blake Bros. American Legion Post 46 in Benwood July 23. Registration will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the first participant out by noon and the last in by 4 p.m., starting and ending at the Legion.

All vehicles are welcome to the event, which will also include a DJ, raffles, a 50/50 drawing and dinner.
