John Marshall High School Athletes, Others Plan Drives for West Virginia Flood Victims

They may be opponents on the gridiron, basketball court or baseball field during the school year, but this week John Marshall High School student-athletes and their parents are working to help fellow Mountain State residents devastated by last week’s flash flooding.

From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, the John Marshall Athletic Boosters will hold a fundraiser for the flood victims in central and southern West Virginia. According to co-director Amanda Lockhart, a car wash will be held throughout the day at the front entrance of the school, and the group will also collect various supplies to assist in relief efforts.

According to Lockhart, supply donations will be made to Appalachian Outreach and any monetary donations received will be donated to various high school athletic programs in areas of the state affected by flooding. She added student athletes, boosters, alumni and community members are welcome at the event.

Participating teams include football, swimming, basketball, cheerleading, golf, hockey, lacrosse, wrestling, volleyball, baseball, softball, soccer, tennis, cross country and track. Students from each team will complete 90-minute shifts in an effort to raise funds and collect supplies for the cause.

“We wanted to do this to support the communities and athletic departments affected by the flooding,” Lockhart said. “This is a great opportunity to give back. We want our students to know they are fortunate enough to not be affected by this tragedy and they should learn to help out struggling athletes and others when they can.”

Students will also collect donations at Wal-Mart, Dairy Queen and Burger King in Moundsville throughout the day.

Lockhart added some items needed include bottled water, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, dust masks, rubber gloves, trash bags, baby wipes, diapers, sunscreen, insect repellent, antibacterial ointment, feminine hygiene products, razors, deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste, shampoo, hair brushes and pet food. For information, call Lockhart at 304-280-3984.
