Kids Keeping Minds Active All Summer at Marshall County Library Reading Program
Library hosting vacation reading programs
Staff at the Marshall County Library in Moundsville are keeping young minds working through the summer.
According to general services librarian Vicki Howsare, the library’s summer reading program began June 1, allowing children to earn rewards for reading. Children are required to complete a reading record and write down the titles and authors of books they check out during the summer.
For every 10 books finished, children receive coupons for local treats and more.
Children who are not yet independent readers can join in as well, as parents can share photos of family reading for the record.
Howsare said about 100 children are currently involved in the program and sign-ups are still available.
“It’s important for children to keep their minds active with something other than computer games,” Howsare said. “This helps their reading skills stay up to par rather than being dropped off and expected to come back to school reading on that same level again.”
The Moundsville and Benwood-McMechen locations also offer special events throughout the week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Pittsburgh-based storyteller Alan Irvine visited both libraries Thursday to share classic myths and tales with summer reading program participants.
