New Superintendent Hired in Wetzel County
The Wetzel County Board of Education this week chose Ritchie County Schools Superintendent Ed Toman to be the school district’s next superintendent.
The announcement came during a board meeting Monday, almost a week after the board interviewed two candidates, including Toman.
Board of education President Mike Blair said Monday Toman, a Paden City native, was expected to be released that evening from his position with Ritchie County Schools. Toman will enter into a one year, $125,000 contract, and his first day on the job will be Friday.
The other candidate interviewed on June 21 was Rick Coffman, superintendent of Doddridge County Schools. The board also had planned to interview Wetzel County Schools Assistant Superintendent Jay Yeager, but Blair said Yeager had requested that his name be removed from consideration.
In his letter to the board, Yeager said he had decided to retire and described the other two candidates as “outstanding,” saying either would be “excellent” for the job as Wetzel County Schools’ superintendent. Yeager further said Wetzel County Schools was “one of the finest school systems and one of the best to work in.”
During his June 21 interview with the board, Toman — who was not at Monday’s board meeting — said he was excited at the prospect of returning to the Ohio Valley.
“There’s nothing like the Valley. The Ohio Valley is my home,” he said during his interview. “To be superintendent and to come back to the community we have, my connection out at Hundred and the friendships I have out that way, and to Valley and Paden City … it would be incredible.”
As for his superintendent skills, Toman stressed he was “transparent and honest.”
“Sometimes that gets you in trouble, but the truth is always to be known,” he said.
