Almost 200 local athletes gathered at John Marshall High School Thursday to raise money and supplies for their neighbors in Southern West Virginia.

From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., the John Marshall Athletic Boosters held a fundraiser for the victims of flooding throughout the Mountain State. Supply donations ranging from baby wipes and laundry detergent to razors and pet food were also collected for dropoff at Appalachian Outreach.

Any monetary donations received will be donated to various high school athletic programs in areas of the state affected by flooding.

Students also collected donations at Wal-Mart, Dairy Queen and Burger King in Moundsville throughout the day.

John Marshall cheerleading coach Marcie Robbins said the team has participated in several charity events, including Relay for Life and more.

“Knowing there was so much devastation downstate, we wanted to get more involved in helping, so some parents contacted our athletic director, Casey Storm, and organized the day,” Robbins said. “They need to know how lucky they are to have avoided such a horrible thing, and helping the community is important to us.”

Madison Estep, a sophomore cheerleader, said she enjoys being active with relief efforts.

“It’s my home state and I think we should help everyone down there,” Estep said. “Helping other people is important to us.”

Head basketball coach Chad Clutter said the success of the drive was due to community involvement.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity to give back to our state. We’ve had people stop on the street and give us $20 donations, and even had someone give $50 for a simple car wash,” Clutter said. “Everyone knows the need is great down there and are responding very well.”
