Ohio Valley Prepares for Festive Weekend

ST CLAIRSVILLE — Many are gearing up for the Independence Day weekend to celebrate 240 years of freedom and the birth of America with parties and ever-popular firework shows.

“The local communities put on good shows for the public, but we know that people will let off their own (fireworks), and we just want everyone to be safe,” said Ty Wilson, assistant chief of the Colerain Volunteer Fire Department.

Those who purchase fireworks to set off from their homes are cautioned to be aware of weather conditions, be mindful of where they are setting them off and to make sure there is no dry brush in the area.

“Be safe and know what you are doing,” Wilson said. “Always properly supervise children around fireworks, follow the instructions and use legal products.”

Wilson added most accidents occur during instances of rowdiness or horseplay, and when fireworks are being used in a manner for which they are not intended.

The following is a list of fireworks shows around the area this weekend:

∫ Belmont County — Barnesville, Memorial Park, dusk Saturday; Martins Ferry, school campus, dusk today; St. Clairsville, Plaza West Fest, dusk Wednesday; St. Clairsville Rec Center, 9 p.m. Tuesday.

∫ Jefferson County — Smithfield, American Legion Post 396, 9 p.m. Sunday; Steubenville, Belleview Municipal Park, 9:45 p.m. Monday; Toronto, 10 p.m. Saturday.

∫ Harrison County — Cadiz, Sally Buffalo Park, dusk Saturday; Hopedale, American Legion, 9 p.m. Monday.

∫ Ohio County — Bethlehem, Community Park Saturday at dusk; Wheeling, Heritage Port, Monday between 9:20 and 9:40 p.m.; Wheeling, Oglebay Park, Sunday at dusk; Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack, Sunday at dusk.

∫ Marshall County — Moundsville, Monday at dusk.
