Veterans Memorial Bridge Ramp in Steubenville to Close For Three Weeks

Photo by Mark Law The eastbound entrance ramp to the U.S. 22 Veterans Memorial Bridge at University Boulevard in Steubenville will close on Monday for nearly three weeks, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The eastbound on-ramp to the Veterans Memorial Bridge at University Boulevard will be closed beginning Monday for 20 days as crews work to realign and reconstruct the ramp, the Ohio Department of Transportation said.

The work is part of an ongoing $10 million access improvement project. ODOT reported the existing ramp will be removed, realigned and reconstructed.

At the same time, an additional turn lane will be built on Ohio 7 south before the University Boulevard intersection and two additional turn lanes will be constructed on University Boulevard up to the newly built ramp that also will have two lanes leading to U.S. 22 east for the Veterans Memorial Bridge, according to ODOT.

During the ramp closure, traffic will be detoured north on Ohio 7 to merge onto U.S. 22 west to the John Scott Highway exit, over the highway and then back onto U.S. 22 east. ODOT advises motorists to plan ahead to avoid delays.

The bridge ramp is expected to be reopened to traffic by Aug. 21.

ODOT’s contractor is Shelly and Sands Inc. of Columbus, and the overall completion date is Nov. 30, 2017.

Lt. Joseph Fetty, Ohio State Highway Patrol Steubenville Post commander, said troopers will be monitoring the flow of traffic on Ohio 7 north to the John Scott Highway exit from U.S. 22. Troopers also will check for motorists making illegal U-turns at the Ohio 213 intersection or using the emergency-vehicle connectors in the middle of the highway to get into the eastbound lanes.

Fetty said he doesn’t expect traffic to back up on U.S. 22 at John Scott Highway.

“For the time being, we’ll take a wait-and-see approach. It will be bad for a couple of days as people get used to it. Thankfully, it is only for 20 days,” Fetty said.
