Leonhardt: Agriculture Should be Taught as Art

Leonhardt: Agriculture Is an Art

WHEELING — West Virginia Sen. Kent Leonhardt believes agriculture is a form of art, and should be considered as such by educators when crafting the curriculum for their school districts.

Leonhardt, a farmer from Fairview, in Monongalia County, is the Republican nominee for state agriculture commissioner in the Nov. 8 general election.

On Tuesday, he visited with members of Grow Ohio Valley at their 4-acre grow site located at the Sandscrest Conference and Retreat Center in Wheeling.

Leonhardt sees the agriculture commissioner’s role as being one to promote education about farming in the schools so the next generation “can learn where their food comes from.”

He sees agriculture fitting in with a “STEAM-based” curriculum focusing on science, technology, education, art and mathematics — with the “A” represented by both art and agriculture.

“I tell educators to not be afraid of agriculture as art,” Leonhardt said.

“There is art and marketing on the labels. The vegetable that serves as garnish on a plate is placed there as art. The presentation of food means art.

“If elected agriculture commissioner, I would promote the ‘A’ in STEAM in our schools not just as art, but as agriculture.”
