A Wheeling native saw his dream to protect and serve his community come true on Monday.

The Ohio County Sheriff’s Department officially welcomed its newest deputy, Brady McConnell, with a swearing-in ceremony before Circuit Judge James Mazzone.

McConnell, 25, a 2009 graduate of Wheeling Park High School, is not the only person in the McConnell family with a badge. His brother, Bobby McConnell, currently serves with the Wheeling Police Department.

McConnell was sworn in by Mazzone on Monday morning with family, fellow officers and several others in attendance. He thanked all of them for their support.

“It’s been a long road,” Brady McConnell said. “It’s been a dream of mine for a long time that finally came to fruition, to become a police officer, and serving as deputy sheriff is where I wanted to be.”

According to Ohio County Sheriff Pat Butler, the department is happy to add McConnell to the team, bringing its staff up to 33 road deputies.

“We are glad to have him. He’s an excellent candidate,” Butler said. “He did well on all his tests and I’m sure he’ll do well as a deputy.”

Among the various requirements for deputy candidates are physical requirements regarding upper body strength, muscular endurance and aerobic power. This includes completing 19 properly executed pushups within one minute, 29 properly executed situps within one minute and a 1.5-mile run in less than 14 minutes, 30 seconds.
