Office Space Leased At The Highlands in Ohio County

About 41,000 square feet of office space at the Town Center area of The Highlands will soon be leased, Ohio County Development Authority members learned Tuesday.

Although the company or companies moving in haven’t been named yet, development authority President Randy Wharton, also a county commissioner, expects to announce the identity of the lessees in the coming days.

Development authority members also discussed a $300,000 project to upgrade water meters in some areas of Ohio County. Starting with residential areas before moving on to businesses, thousands of meters will be replaced this year.

The new water meters will be electronically read, allowing for more efficient and accurate readings.

In other business, county Administrator Greg Stewart announced the impending sale of the land for the Texas Roadhouse at The Highlands. The current owners of the land lease plan to finalize the sale within the next 30 days.

Business at Texas Roadhouse will continue as usual, Stewart said, with a simple change in land ownership. Although he said the authority is not currently in a position to purchase the land, Stewart said it would be something worth considering if not for all of the other projects the county has on its plate.

The Ohio County Commission also met for a brief meeting Tuesday following the development authority meeting. Commissioners approved applying for a Homeland Security grant for an emergency management agency education project. The grant would help the county set up a program similar to the Citizens Police Academy that the Wheeling Police Department operates as an outreach to residents.

Commissioners learned the Wheeling-Ohio County Airport recently received a $15,000 state aeronautics grant. The funds will contribute to ongoing changes at the airport including some changes in gas line piping.

Commissioners also announced they will draw for ballot position for the Nov. 8 general election on Aug. 30 at their office.
