Buckeye Local Appoints Interim Superintendent

With outgoing Superintendent Mark Miller leaving on Friday, the Buckeye Local Board of Education appointed a current district employee to serve as interim superintendent.

At the regular meeting of the Buckeye Local Board of Education this week, the board passed a resolution to appoint administrative assistant Scott Celestin to the interim post.

Celestin will begin his interim term on Saturday.

“I have been in the administrative assistant position technically two years, but I have been serving in this position for six years. My title was just changed two years ago. I did express interest in the interim position before I was appointed, but there was no guarantee that they would choose me,” Celestin said.

Celestin said he is interested in becoming the permanent superintendent and will formally apply for the job.

The position was officially posted Wednesday, and the district will be taking applications, interviewing and making a decision on a permanent hire in the next few months.

“December is a good ballpark of when the board should have a decision, but we will take our time to make sure we make the best decision we can,” said board President Joseph Zelek.

Zelek said the board appointed Celestin because he had been doing a good job within the district, and that the board likes to “promote from within whenever possible.”

“We appointed him to the interim position because you have to have a superintendent, and he was a main assistant, along with Angela Hicks. They have both helped so much during this transition. We had inquiries from outside, but I like to use people from within the school district. They’ve been doing a good job, so why seek outside the district?” Zelek said.

“We appreciate the people at the office that are carrying us through this transition,” he added.

Celestin had good things to say about Miller.

“I’ve worked with him for 10 years. He’s done a lot of good things and has had to make a lot of tough decisions. I’ve learned a lot from him over the years,” Celestin said.

“The position is new to me, so I don’t want to make any bold predictions. I just want to do what’s best for the district, the students, parents and community. We do a lot of great things already. I want to continue those and find new things to do to make Buckeye Local the best,” Celestin added.
