Food and Coat Collection Begin Community Event in Marshall County

Photo by Drew Parker Rock ‘N Rowdy’s owner Rowdy Workman prepares for the upcoming “Warm the Community, Feed the Hungry” event, led by his restaurant and other local businesses.

A local restaurant owner is working to bring the community together to provide cold-weather necessities for Marshall County children.

When Rock ‘N Rowdy’s owner Rowdy Workman noticed children in need throughout Marshall County, he decided to begin his own service project. Workman’s business, Rock ‘N Rowdy’s, along with over 15 local establishments, will again partner with the Salvation Army and the House of the Carpenter in an effort to keep locals fed and out of the cold.

The second-annual “Warm the Community, Feed the Hungry” event, slated from 1-5 p.m. Oct. 15 in the Moundsville Pharmacy parking lot, will feature food, live entertainment and various activities, with all proceeds going to local charities. Participants are asked to bring a donation of a warm coat in good condition or canned food products instead of paying for a ticket.

“I learned that 35 percent of our school kids only ate at school and most didn’t have coats, so it was time to do something about it,” Workman said. “Small businesses are what created America and we need to take care of our own.”

According to Workman, cash donations are welcome and will be used to buy new coats for children. With less than a month remaining before the event, Workman is asking area residents and businesses to make monetary donations for the event, along with early coat and non-perishable food donations.

The event will include raffles, inflatables, clowns, superhero appearances, pony rides and more.

Stevie Lynn, Nate Smith, Take a Bow Dance Studio, and Crazy Horse will provide live entertainment. Rock ‘N Rowdy’s will be providing free hot dogs and other businesses will offer various snacks and treats.

Workman added last year’s event was a success, resulting in 585 coats and 900 canned food items donated.

“This year the event itself has gotten a lot bigger,” Workman said.

Coats and canned goods can be dropped off at the restaurant, Moundsville Pharmacy or Hudson Premier Physical Therapy and Fitness Center.

For sponsorship or dropoff information, Workman can be reached at 614-940-5612.
