Cameron High School Counselor Recognized

A counselor for Cameron High School has been commended by the West Virginia School Counselor Association for her efforts to prepare Cameron’s youth for the challenges that await them.

Kelly Pettit was named West Virginia High School Counselor of the Year at the organization’s annual conference Oct. 14. Pettit said she was selected after being nominated by Principal Jack Cain for her work in organizing the comprehensive counseling program at the school, such as the Personalized Education Plan, a system under which teachers and students form teams that stick together through their entire term of high school.

The program aims to foster personalized learning and offers students the opportunity to pick up vital skills, such as filling out federal student aid request forms and learning the tax system.

“Every Wednesday, students get everything from conflict resolution, bullying (prevention), how to get along, all the way up to completing a FAFSA, learning how to do taxes, career research, military,” Pettit said. “We’re trying to prepare students from as early as seventh grade up through senior year, to get them to know what they want to do after high school.”

At Tuesday’s Marshall County Board of Education meeting, Pettit presented the board with a summary of some of the programs underway at Cameron High School. Board President Beth Phillips said it was easy to see how Pettit won the award after demonstrating the programs in place at the school.

The West Virginia elementary and grade school counselors of the year were both chosen from Upshur County.

“I was excited, but I was also humbled that I’d be chosen among all the others in the state. This isn’t something I took lightly,” Pettit said.

In addition to Pettit’s presentation on programs at Cameron, the board also heard a similar presentation from Cameron Elementary School.
