Concrete Work Underway on Center Street in Martins Ferry

The $400,000 First Street repaving project has entered another phase with repairs to Center Street intersection.

Work on the intersection began Monday and includes the removal of old pavement.

It is being replaced with concrete.

This same job was conducted during the past two weeks at the intersection of Hanover and First streets.

The concrete is expected to stand up better to the heavy truck traffic the industrial part of the city sees on a daily basis. Shelly & Sands Construction is the contractor on the job.

During the Center Street work, that portion of First Street will remain closed to traffic.

Detour signs are posted to help motorists navigate the area. Hanover Street has reopened since the concrete there is finished.

After this latest concrete work is finished, it will be on to the final paving portion of the project.

“After that point they will go ahead with the milling and paving of First Street. They are still ahead of schedule on the project,” said Service Director Chris Cleary during a recent city council meeting. “While it has a 90-day completion date, it looks like the contractor will be done far ahead of that.”

He noted by using faster-curing cement, the project has been accelerated.

Although it cost the city a little more money, it allowed business to pick back up at the Marathon Hanover Fuel Stop, which relies heavily on trucking customers.
