Construction Underway on John Marshall High School Equipment Shed in Glen Dale

Photo by Alan Olson Construction of a new equipment garage for John Marshall High School is underway near the school’s baseball fields.

A new building that’s gone up quickly along W.Va. 2 near John Marshall will be used to house equipment that keeps the school’s athletic fields looking their best.

Occupying the space between John Marshall’s baseball field and W.Va. 2, the garage is being built to house the equipment necessary to maintain the school’s sports fields. Some of that equipment had been left outside, exposed to the elements, for lack of a permanent place to keep it, according to Athletic Director Rob Chavanak.

“They’ll put the equipment for lawn maintenance, maybe some pitching machines, in there,” Chavanak said. “Some of it had to sit out. They had nowhere to put it.”

Chavanak said the school was able to build the garage thanks to several grants it had received, in addition to a donation from Williams Energy, that totaled $13,500. The remainder of the funds were raised by the baseball boosters.

J&M Carpenters broke ground on the project last week, and it is expected to be completed within a few weeks.

“Last week, they cleared the footer for the building itself,” Chavanak said. “The garage door (company) will wait about three to four weeks, once the building is done, to install the doors.”

In coming weeks, Chavanak said the same stretch of field will be used to house another construction project, as a pavilion is set to be installed in the near future, to provide seating and shade in the summer months. Volunteers are expected to complete this project.

“They’ll be able to sit and watch a game, the team can sit and get out of the sun. There might be some picnic tables underneath of it,” he said.
