Judge David Hummel Back After Health Scare in Marshall County

HUMMEL

Following a brief health scare Monday morning, Second Judicial Circuit Judge David Hummel is back on the job, in good health and high spirits.

During a hearing Monday morning, Hummel was taken from the courthouse by paramedics after suddenly suffering symptoms similar to those of a heart attack. He was taken to Wheeling Hospital, where he was evaluated and given a clean bill of health. However, Hummel said rumors about his condition soon spread, some more dramatic than others.

“Reports of my demise had been greatly exaggerated,” Hummel quipped Friday morning. “One of the rumors was that I had been shot. With the number of police that were around, the rumor was that something greater had happened.”

Hummel returned to the office briefly Wednesday to assure the staff he was healthy, before visiting attorneys in their offices to do the same.

While his symptoms ultimately were found to be harmless, Hummel urged anyone who should find themselves in the same position to seek medical help immediately.

“There were heart attack-like symptoms, severe chest pain on the left, profuse sweating, and my bailiff recognized, as did I, that I needed to get checked out, instead of being stubborn, which I typically am,” he said. “I would urge anybody who might have similar symptoms to go get checked out.”

As a precaution, numerous agencies, including Moundsville police and the Moundsville Fire Department, were called to assist. Hummel said he would be holding a thank-you lunch for the courthouse staff, first responders and others who assisted him in his time of need, later in October.

“Just to say thanks to everyone who helped and showed their professionalism for everyone who took care of me,” he said. “From the bailiffs, to the paramedics, to the law enforcement who held the stoplights so I could get through. I owe them all at least a lunch.”
