Moundsville’s Janelle Vickers Finalist For Ms. Mountaineer

A Moundsville native is among the finalists for West Virginia University’s prestigious honor of Ms. Mountaineer 2016.

Janelle Vickers of Moundsville is in the running for the award, which recognizes students’ exemplary academic achievement and extracurricular involvement. Mr. and Ms. Mountaineer are a part of Mountaineer Week, which kicks off Friday and runs through Nov. 6.

Samantha Shimer of Parkersburg also is up for the honor.

One male and one female finalist will be named Mr. and Ms. Mountaineer at the Nov. 5 football game vs. Kansas.

Vickers is a senior literary and cultural studies and communication studies dual major and a member of the Honors College. She is the recipient of the Bucklew Scholarship and Eberly scholarships, and has served as an intern with the Shakespeare Globe New Zealand.

Vickers is a research assistant with the West Virginia Dialect Project and serves as a volunteer for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Other Ms. Mountaineer finalists are Shelby Boggs of Shippensburg, Pa.; Julie Peng of Hurricane, W.Va.; and Abby Roberts of Yorktown, Va.

Mr. Mountaineer finalists are: Jake Byrne of Sinking Spring, Pa.; Dillon Muhly-Alexander of Bridgeport, W.Va.; Andrew Sutherland of Alexandria, Va.; Layne Veneri of Princeton, W.Va.; and Josh Watson of Morgantown.
