Ohio County Board of Education Seeks Information On Computers

Ohio County Board of Education members want to know what the cost to the school was after some computers in the Ohio County Schools central office were found with no information on them when new employees assumed positions there in July.

During the board’s meeting Monday at Madison Elementary School, board member Shane Mallett requested a report be prepared and presented to the board detailing what happened with the computers.

“I would like an update on the amount of time and money spent on the issue we had when Dr. Miller and her staff took (over), and what took place with the computer system being wiped out,” he said. “We’ve let that go for a couple of months.”

When asked for additional details after the meeting, Mallett referred questions to Superintendent Kim Miller.

“We had some computers with no information on them,” she said, declining to comment further.

Mallett also called for reviews of employee payrolls to make certain employees are being paid the correct amount due them. It has been brought to the attention of the board that some employees are not receiving a proper salary reflective of their certification, he said.

Board members also announced their six goals for the upcoming year, with the following areas to be emphasized:

∫ Making progress on and improving standardized assessment scores, and also maintaining a graduation rate of at least 95 percent;

∫ Improving the social climate “across the board” within the schools, while engaging students, staff and the broader community;

∫ Having a plan for maintenance and replacement of school property;

∫ Developing a technology vision aligned with academic achievement goals and career-readiness initiatives. This plan calls for school officials to visit at least two of the top 10 schools ranked in America as having the best technological offerings;

∫ Preparing a five-year fiscal project for the school district, while striving to set aside 3 percent of the budget as a rainy day fund; and

∫ Maintaining a positive carryover balance for the school year.
