Wheeling Man Charged for Possession After Marshall County Vehicle Stop

A Wheeling man is facing a felony charge following a Tuesday traffic stop in Marshall County.

Around 10 p.m. Tuesday, Benwood police responded to North Marshall Street, where a blue Oldsmobile was observed traveling north and swerving from left to right while crossing center lines on the street.

According to a criminal complaint, the responding officer initiated a traffic stop in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant and spoke with the driver, Alexander Joseph McKown, 24, of 202 17th St., Wheeling.

McKown allegedly advised the officer he had been using his cellphone and was not paying attention to the road prior to the stop.

During the conversation, the officer noted in his report glassy eyes, slurred speech and lethargic behavior from McKown, the complaint states.

McKown then allegedly stated he was not using any alcohol, narcotics or prescription medication but said he would “rather not” consent to a search of his vehicle because he was on his way to a family dinner.

While filling out a traffic citation, an officer from the McMechen Police Department called for Marshall County K-9 Spartan to assess McKown’s vehicle.

According to the complaint, McKown voluntarily surrendered 5.5 grams of marijuana to officers before the K-9 arrived on scene. During a vehicle search, the K-9 detected a positive hit on McKown’s trunk, which resulted in the discovery of a set of digital sales and a grinder in a small bag, the complaint states.

McKown is charged with felony possesion with intent to deliver and texting while driving. He is free on $2,500 bond.
