More Than $3,000 In Cigarettes Stolen in South Wheeling

A thief or thieves stole more than $3,000 in Marlboro cigarettes Sunday from Schmidt Brothers Sunoco & Carryout in South Wheeling.

“They broke a window to gain entry to steal cigarettes,” said owner Rob Schmidt, noting two cases of cigarettes were taken during the crime.

On Monday morning, the window at the business was covered with beer and cigarette posters, held together neatly by duct tape. A representative from American Plate Glass in Wheeling was on scene, in the process of planning to replace the window.

The Wheeling Police Department is investigating the crime that occurred at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday at the business, located the 2800 block of Eoff Street. That investigation includes obtaining any surveillance video the gas station might have.

“Sometimes businesses have to get permission” from corporate offices, to release surveillance video, said Philip Stahl, police spokesman.

Investigators are also checking into whether American Tire, a business nearby, has any video of the crime. So far, however, Stahl said police don’t have any suspects.

Schmidt said he believes the crime may have been committed by someone familiar with the neighborhood.
