Steubenville City Budget Draft Set for Dec. 9 Release

As Steubenville officials look at next year’s municipal budget, the city will be trying to function efficiently with fewer resources at a time when the need for city services is on the increase.

Dave Lewis, the city’s finance director, told city council during this week’s meeting he soon would have a draft of the 2017 fiscal year city budget ready for council’s perusal and consideration.

“My intention is to get the (draft) completed by Dec. 9.” said Lewis.

He noted there is plently of additional year-end legislation for council to consider as well over the next few weeks.

Lewis said council could examine the proposed budget during a sunshine meeting scheduled for next Tuesday and then vote on the proposed budget during the planned Dec. 20 regular council meeting.

Council will have a week to examine the proposed budget and an opportunity to discuss and ask questions, Lewis noted.

Councilman Bob Villamagna said he wants city residents to understand changes in the proposed budget are intended to help the city function more efficiently with less resources.

“We’re trying to adjust these things because of the manpower,” said Villamagna.

He adding that he is hoping council has residents’ support for any changes made.

Council voted to hold a meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers for its first look at the proposed budget.

During the planning committee meeting, council discussed the demolition of condemned properties.

“Can we go after these property owners?” Johnson asked, adding he had a list of some property owners he said would be able to afford to pay for demolitions.

“I believe we should go after every one of them. It’s a fairness thing. It’s like welfare for the rich, and we’re worried about money.”

Council discussed several options for making owners accountable for the cost of demolition.
