Students at Wheeling Central Serve as Santa’s Helpers, Collect Food Packages

Good Elves Students at Wheeling Central Catholic High School served as Santa’s helpers when they collected 19,168 packages of food during their annual food drive recently. The items were taken to the Catholic Charities 18th Street Neighborhood Center to restock the shelves for distribution to those in need. Thank you, Maroon Knights, for caring about your community!  Halls Bedecked Though few families entered Moundsville’s Christmas decorating contest, three families were honored for the homes and took awards for their holiday spirit. Richard and Darla Beaver, of Pine Avenue, took first place for their home, while Peggy Goggle and William Jersey took second and third place, respectively.  The families were honored at the city council meeting, where they received certificates and a cash prize. The previous week, so few people had participated that one observer considered hanging up a wreath and walking away with a net gain just by signing up, though holiday decorations were just as common as every year in general.  Want to Make a Difference?  The city of Wheeling is seeking candidates interested in working as entry-level police officers.  The official signup period began Monday and continues through Friday, Jan. 13. The notice and application are both available online or can be picked up at the City-County Building in room 301, on the third floor. Particularly of late, city officials have complained of a lack of qualified applicants — so if you think a career in law enforcement is for you, put your name in the mix.  Santa’s Helpers A shipment of toys and books arrived this week at an elementary school in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. — one of the communities hit hard by flooding this past summer. The shipment didn’t come from the North Pole, however, but from the students, faculty and staff at Steenrod Elementary School in Wheeling. School officials dropped the gifts off Wednesday in hopes of making Christmas a little brighter for kids who have been through a lot this year.
