West Virginia Wesleyan President’s Medal Awarded To Wheeling’s Ben Exley

EXLEY

The West Virginia Wesleyan College’s President’s Medal will be awarded to Ben Exley IV of Wheeling, retired executive director of the West Virginia Independent Colleges and Universities from 2010-2016, during the Emeritus Club dinner today on the Buckhannon campus. The medal is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to Wesleyan and higher education.

During his time with the independent colleges, Exley was responsible for all operations of the organization, as well as the Annual Scholarship Campaign. Prior to serving as the executive director, Exley was a board member from 1999-2008 and held several officer positions including chair. He also enjoyed a successful career in marketing, public relations, and sales.

Exley served as executive vice president of James Communications, interim executive director for the Ohio Valley Industrial and Business Development Corp., now known as RED, Mid-Atlantic regional vice president of Cardinal Health, and president and CEO of Ohio Valley Clarksburg Inc.

A 1968 graduate of Wesleyan, Exley served as a member of the school’s board for eight years. He was also a board member at The Linsly School, Valley National Gases and OVIBDC, and several other non-profit organizations.

Exley and his wife, Lynne, are charter members of the Wesleyan Society and have been members every year since the leadership circle was established in 1995. The Exleys have contributed to Wesleyan in many other ways including hosting Wheeling area alumni receptions at their home and recruiting new students.

“Ben Exley has dedicated much of his life to furthering the cause of private higher education in West Virginia,” said West Virginia Wesleyan President Pamela Balch. “We honor him for his service to private higher education and to West Virginia Wesleyan College.”

There have been six other recipients since the inception of the President’s Medal in 2000, including Dale Turner ’43 (2000), Doug Miller ’59 (2000), James Knorr ’63 (2007), Jerry Beasley (2008), Frank ’87 and Jane Williams (2010), and Franklin “Hank” Ellis ’43 (2011).
