Students and staff at All Saints School in Moundsville are working to put love in action throughout Marshall County.

According to Principal Sheila Blackmore, the school created a service-learning program for its students in 2015. She said the program, inspired by the 2016 “Year of Mercy” for Catholics, teaches civic responsibility and strengthens the community.

“Students learn how their service affects individuals and our local community. A large part of our school mission involves inspiring a passion for service,” Blackmore said. “We’ve noticed some of the kids now coming forward with their own ideas for how they want to help other people.”

Recently, the All Saints students collected over 850 non-perishable food items to help stock Simpson United Methodist Church’s soup kitchen. Later this month, students will visit Moundview Nursing Home to deliver valentines they had made for the residents. The visit was delayed due to an illness.

Earlier projects have included trips to the Marshall County Animal Shelter which students will repeat in May, prayer services for emergency responders, donations to the Helping Heroes veterans’ organization and more.

Religion teacher Devon Bell said the projects inspire students to think of those in need each day.

“I can sit here and teach day in and day out, or I can give them opportunities to put their love into action and that’s what we’re trying to do. We want to give the students a sense of responsibility and ownership for the charities we do and get them to realize the impact we’re making.”

Bell said projects next year will be more hands-on.

“We’re reaching out to organizations that can let students do a little more work, Bell said. “Next year will be more active service.”
