Bethlehem Council Discusses Neighborhood ATV Riding

Bethlehem Mayor Tim Bishop told village council members Tuesday he has received calls from residents of Mount Lebanon and Baytree drives and Renaissance Way complaining about people — mostly juveniles — riding all-terrain vehicles in a reckless manner on their streets.

Bishop said most of the residents reported the youths were speeding up and down the street. He said while their is no law prohibiting the use of ATVs on back streets in the village, there are safety laws that must be observed. He said by the time a police officer arrives on the scene, the offenders are usually gone.

Bishop said he is very concerned for the safety of the youngsters that are driving the ATVs.

“It’s dangerous and somebody is going to get hurt and it’s most likely going to be one of the kids driving four -wheelers … and I really think this really needs to be on the parents to teach their kids about safely riding four-wheelers,” Bishop said. “According to the West Virginia state code you can ride it, but you can’t speed — you have to have a license, you have to be wearing a helmet. You just can’t jump on a four-wheeler and ride down the road.”

Also during the meeting, Bishop advised council that two break-ins occurred on Chapel Road since the last meeting. He said police are still investigating the matter and hope to catch the offender. After his report about the break-ins, a Bethlehem resident who declined to be identified asked council if it would be possible to start a neighborhood watch group.

“I would be glad to help facilitate a neighborhood watch,” Bishop said.

In other business, Bishop reported a 6-inch waterline break occurred on Woodcrest Drive. He said while crews already repaired the break, they will eventually need to repair a water shut-off valve at that same location.

The next council meeting is scheduled for 8 p.m. March 6 at the village building.
