Shriners Elect Giffin Potentate for 2017

The Osiris Shriners recently elected and installed Donald F. Giffin Sr. as potentate for 2017.

Giffin’s motto — “sowing seeds of faith for our children” — reaffirms the pledge he made when he became a Shriner in 1987 to support the Shriner hospitals and the children in their care.

Osiris Shrine encompasses clubs and units in 19 counties in West Virginia over which Giffin will serve as CEO. They focus their financial support on three Shrine hospitals in the area — Erie Hospital, which specializes in orthopedic care; Philadelphia Hospital, where children suffering from cleft lip and palate are treated; and the Cincinnati Burn Center. There are 22 hospitals worldwide.

Born and raised on Rock Hill in Bellaire, Giffin graduated from Bellaire High School in 1957. He has been married for 56 years to his high school sweetheart, Paula Sabinski Giffin. They have two children, Susan Helms and Donald Giffin II, and three grandchildren.

Giffin was a 35-year employee of Ohio Power/American Electric Power, retiring in 1999. He continues to raise feeder cattle and produce quality alfalfa hay on the family farm.

Many fundraising events are scheduled for 2017 under Giffin’s direction. Those events will include the Morgantown Shrine Club Hospital benefit on March 4 in Morgantown; the annual Shrine Circus at WesBanco Arena on March 14; a Kentucky Derby Day fundraiser on May 6 at the Shrine Center in Elm Grove; and “Breakfast with the Easter Bunny” for area children and their parents at the Shrine Center on April 8. A gun bash scheduled for Nov. 11 at the Shrine Center also will be a major fundraiser.

Shriners Hospitals for children is a network of 22 non-profit medical facilities across North America. Children with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients’ ability to pay. If you have a child or know of a child under the age of 18 who could benefit from the expert treatment and care offered by Shriner hospitals, call the Osiris Shrine Center at 304-242-2911.
