West Liberty University helped out its neighbor recently when it assisted West Liberty Elementary raise money for needed playground equipment.

“We thank West Liberty University for this opportunity to fundraise and we look forward to continuing to work with our Partner in Education and the entire community to see this vision become a reality,” said April Hogan, co-chair of the playground committee and a parent.

The overall goal of the playground project is $30,000. West Liberty University is the official Partner in Education, named by Ohio County Schools.

Hogan is being assisted in the fundraising effort by co-chair Dr. David Hanna, who is program director for WLU’s Athletic Training and also has children in the elementary school.

The WLU assistance included money raised at the Jan. 14 Hilltopper basketball games, held at the Academic, Sports and Recreation Complex.

Executive Director of Alumni and Community Relations Ron Witt coordinated the raffle at the request of WLU President Stephen Greiner. Others assisting in the effort included WLU volleyball players and Coach Herb Minch.

A total of $226 was raised from the raffle and another $64 was collected at the concession stands.

“We have been working diligently to raise funds for new playground equipment and update our children’s playground. The money raised from the raffle will go to our PTO, to benefit this project. We have a vision of a new fitness geared playground for our children, including a flexible climber, kid force spinner chairs, and a dual kit coaster. This is Phase 1 of our update. We hope to have these installed this summer, if we can reach our goal of $30,000 for the equipment and installation. We are in fact well on our way, with an amount of $13,500 already raised,” said Hogan. One-hundred and twenty-five children, grades pre-K through five, attend the elementary school and West Liberty University is just one of its official Partners in Education, as designated by Ohio County Schools administration. Stacy Greer is its principal.

Located at 745 Van Meter Way, it is just a short distance from WLU’s main gate. For more information, call the elementary school at 304-336-7221.
