Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic to Award Medals to 5K Participants in Wheeling

Organizers of the Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic are making sure those who finish this year’s 5K events will get the recognition they deserve.

This year, those who cross the finish line in the 5K Run/Walk for Health will receive medals marking the accomplishment, in addition to those who conquer the 13.1-mile half marathon course. The 41st annual running of the Ogden race is set for May 27 on the streets of Wheeling.

According to Race Director R. “Scat” Scatterday, the decision to award medals to 5K participants was the result of listening to runners and walkers over the years. He said the race has recognized finishers in a number of ways over the years, from certificates to wall plaques.

“Medals are the most desirable form of recognition among runners,” Scatterday said.

Regardless of an entrant’s motivation for taking part in the race — whether it’s competition with fellow runners, trying to beat a personal-best time or simply a commitment to a healthier lifestyle — Scatterday said the medal serves as an important, tangible symbol of a goal achieved.

“This medal is an indication that they accomplished something they were trying to do, and what they were trying to do is conquer the course,” Scatterday said, noting for many runners and walkers the 5K is the first competitive race they’ve entered. “Now, we are making sure they have an indicator of that success.”

Scatterday said preparations for this year’s race are on course, for which he credits the many volunteers who handle various aspects of the event, from registration to course safety and the multiple aid stations available to runners and walkers along the way.

Online registration is available at ogdenhalfmarathonclassic.com. To anyone who’s thought about participating but has yet to do so, Scatterday promises an experience that won’t soon be forgotten.

“They take it as a personal challenge to cover the distance,” he said of the hundreds who take part in the Ogden race each year. “And if you’ve not done that, I would strongly encourage anyone to do it at least once, even if it’s just the walk.”

Ogden race events once again will take place on a single day, May 27. The fun begins with the Half Marathon Walk at 7:30 a.m., followed by the Half Marathon Run and Run Relay at 8 a.m., the 5K Run/Walk at 8:15 a.m. and the mile-long Ogden Fun Run at 8:20 a.m. All those events begin and end at 14th and Main streets, with the exception of the Fun Run, which begins at 14th and Main but ends on Water Street.

And the Tiny Tot Trot, a 100-yard dash for children 5 and under, is back once again and will feature two heats — 4- and 5-year-olds run first, followed by those 3 and under. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the trot takes place at 9 a.m. on Water Street near Heritage Port.
