Kalkreuth Roofing & Sheet Metal Official Speaks on Core Values, Career at Wheeling Rotary

Six years ago, Shawn Snodgrass came to Wheeling from Pennsylvania in search of a lasting career. He found it at Kalkreuth Roofing & Sheet Metal.

As guest speaker at Wheeling Rotary Club’s weekly meeting Tuesday, Snodgrass said, “As soon as I moved here, I knew I didn’t want to move again. I love the area.”

The son of a preacher and an Army drill sergeant/construction worker, Snodgrass said his typical middle-American upbringing included his parents instilling a healthy work ethic in him.

It’s that work ethnic that got him noticed at Kalkreuth, where several core values are what have taken Kalkreuth from a struggling roofing company in the mid-1980s to a firm known today nationwide for its quality work and products.

Snodgrass, the residential/service manager at Kalkreuth in Wheeling, said the management team of John Kalkreuth, president and CEO; and Jim Hurley, executive vice president; forged the path to the company’s success by setting the example of hard work and determination.

“In the mid-1980s when John and Jim took on this company, they both worked four days a week in the office and five days a week on the roof.

“They are very, very hard workers. They got on the roofs in 90-degree heat … doing the most dirty and hard work,” Snodgrass said.

As the company advanced and grew in size and reputation, Kalkreuth and Hurley committed to six core values: hard work, commitment, people, financial strength, community and safety. Today, Kalkreuth has operations in West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Kentucky.

Snodgrass, when being interviewed for a job at Kalkreuth, asked how long the average employee has worked at the roofing company.

He said he was surprised to learn that 10 workers had more than 30 years of service and many of the others were 20-year employees.

“I thought, ‘This is a company that knows how to take care of its people,'” Snodgrass said.

He said Kalkreuth offers internships for college students who might just find a career with the company.

Many already have. One such intern was Dave Hesse, who was studying industrial engineering at West Virginia University when he was tapped for an internship at Kalkreuth.

Today, Hesse leads the Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal Maryland Division as its vice president.
