Weirton CIty Council Approves New Contract, Raises for Cops

Weirton City Council on Monday finalized a new contract with the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 84 that includes pay raises for the union’s membership.

During previous discussions, City Manager Travis Blosser explained the ordinance would adjust the hourly pay of probationary patrolmen from $16.53 to $18.18; patrolmen from $17.65 to $19.42; sergeants from $18.98 to $20.88; lieutenants from $20.36 to $22.40; and captains from $22.08 to $24.29.

The increase followed changes in the city’s health care plan, with the contract also adjusting holiday pay regulations, Blosser has noted.

Prior to the vote, Brian Beatty, president of FOP 84, addressed council, noting union representatives have been working with city officials for approximately nine months to craft the new contract.

“It’s been a work in progress. There have been a lot of ups and downs,” Beatty said.

Beatty also requested council to consider amending the contract to make the new pay rates retroactive to Nov. 1, explaining the FOP’s last contract ended in October.

Council went behind closed doors into executive session for 17 minutes to discuss Beatty’s request before voting.

During open discussion, Ward 4 Councilman George Ash moved to amend the contract to make it effective retroactive to July 1. The motion was seconded by Ward 3 Councilman Fred Marsh, but defeated by a 2-4 vote. Ash and Marsh voted in favor of the amendment, with Councilmen Tim Connell, Matt Provenzano, Enzo Fracasso and Terry Weigel voting against. Ward 5 Councilman Douglas Jackson was not in attendance.

With the amendment defeated, council then approved the ordinance in its original form, with an effective date of Monday, by a 6-0 vote.
