Cleveland Man Arrested For Assault in Wheeling
A man from Cleveland faces a first-degree sexual assault charge after allegedly fondling a young girl at her home.
According to a criminal complaint, David Ray Thomas, 34, arrived at a friend’s home between May 1, 2016 and July 8, 2016 to spend the night due to a lack of transportation.
The girl’s mother reportedly left Thomas alone with her two children while she took a shower, according to the report.
The girl was 9 or 10 years old when the alleged abuse occurred.
Thomas was laying on the couch with the girl while the mother was in the bathroom when he allegedly put his hand inside of the girl’s clothes, according to the complaint.
The girl reportedly told investigators she pretended to be asleep because she was afraid, the complaint states.
The complaint alleges Thomas stopped touching the girl when he heard the bathroom door open. According to the complaint, the girl’s mother indicated that Thomas suggested she take a shower.
Thomas advised the girl’s mother he would watch her other child, who was sick, according to the complaint. The mother stated she was in the restroom for 15-20 minutes, which is consistent with the window of time Thomas allegedly was alone with the children.
The alleged abuse came to light through a series of interviews conducted by Wheeling’s Harmony House, West Virginia Child Protective Services and the Wheeling Police Department.
Thomas remains held at the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville on a $25,000, cash-only bond.
