Generations Pub Celebrates Marines 242nd Birthday

Birthday traditions continued this year for the Marine Corps with the annual celebration held Nov. 10 at Generations Pub in Wheeling.

Members of the 59th Special Infantry Co., U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and other fellow Marines gathered at Generations Pub to celebrate the 242nd birthday of the Corps. The celebration began with the reading of the formation of the Corps by the Second Continental Congress on Nov. 10, 1775 under Commandant Samuel Nicholas. Next came the reading of Order 47 by John Lejeune, major general, commandant, Nov. 10, 1921, and each Nov. 10. Order 47 is a history of the Corps from its founding to the date of the first reading.

Jeremy McCamic, senior member of the gathering, gave the reading of Order 47. This was followed by the reading of the names of deceased members of the 59th SIC.

The final formality of the celebration is the cutting of the birthday cake. The senior member makes the first cut using a sword while the junior most member makes the second cut. McCamic made the first cut, and junior member Kevin Sikora make the second cut.
