Hancock County Board of Education Welcomes Shaw as New Board Member

NEW CUMBERLAND — The newest member of the Hancock County Board of Education cast his first votes Monday, while a former board member was honored for his dedication to the county schools.

Monday’s meeting was the first with new board member Larry Shaw, who was appointed by the board at the Nov. 13 meeting to finish the term of John Manypenny, who stepped down a month earlier to spend more time with his family.

Shaw, who recently retired after spending 33 of his 34-year career with Oak Glen High School as a teacher and head wrestling coach, was one of six applicants who applied for the vacant seat.

“I look forward to working with the other board members,” Shaw said. “This is a great school system. I would’ve never even considered this if I didn’t think that I had a great work life or a great career here, and I always thought that the board was supportive and everybody I’ve worked with has been a bunch of great people.”

Shaw said he looks to get caught up as much as possible on the board’s initiatives while also pondering if he will consider running for a full term in May.

“I’m excited for the opportunity, and I realize I’m only filling John’s seat until the election, and so I’ll be on for seven months,” Shaw said. “We’ll see. I haven’t decided yet for sure whether I’m going to run or not, but that decision will take its own due course.”

Chief Financial Officer Joseph Campinelli administered the oath of office to Shaw.

The board also took time to recognize Manypenny, who worked with the Hancock County schools for 26 years, and board President Toni Hinerman presented Manypenny with a plaque.

“I’ve enjoyed myself on the board,” Manypenny said. “I’ve worked with a lot of good people, and it was enjoyable. I think we’ve got a lot, over the years, accomplished.”

Two previous superintendents, Suzan Smith and Dan Keyser, were in attendance to honor Manypenny.

In other business, the board:

∫ Approved the assignments of Wendy DeAngelis and Joan Murray as Skills USA co-sponsors at the John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center.

∫ Approved the transfers of countywide substitute teachers Ashley Turley and Ryann Vranovich.

Effective Thursday, Turley will serve as a multi-category/autism teacher at Allison Elementary, while Vranovich will serve as social studies teacher at Weir High School.

∫ Approved the terminations of Tyler Blanco, Nancy Conley and Angela Pykosz, all three of whom were placed on administrative release. The board also approved the elimination of a secretary position within the maintenance department.

Superintendent Tim Woodward said rather than having a reduction-in-force at the end of the school year, he said he looked to eliminate the position and consider consolidating other positions with the system.
