Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Wheeling Bans Visitors During Flu Outbreak

WHEELING — Good Shepherd Nursing Home has closed its facility to visitors because of a widespread influenza outbreak in the community.

Donald Kirsch, administrator of the 200-bed facility, said the visiting ban will continue “until this subsides, both in the local community and internally.”

He said, “Approximately 25 percent of the residents have had some flu. That number is down to 20 percent, thanks to our nursing staff.”

Kirsch added, “Approximately 40 to 50 of our residents have had the flu. Seventy-five to 80 percent of our residents have not contracted the flu … We believe we do have it under control.”

He thanked the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department and county health officer Dr. William Mercer for their assistance in combating the outbreak.
