Detective Corporal Rob Safreed of the Wheeling Police Department has been named Officer of the Year for 2017 by Chief Shawn Schwertfeger.

Safreed has worked with the investigations division of the department for three years, and has been employed by the department since 2009. Those who nominated Safreed view him as an officer who is dedicated to his position and is a team player who uplifts the department as a whole.

Safreed, who was born and raised in Wheeling, is a member of the Wheeling Police Department’s SWAT Team, a field training officer, liaison for the West Virginia Fusion Center and is a defensive tactics instructor. Safreed also has participated in multiple DUI patrols throughout Wheeling in addition to his normal police duties.

Safreed investigated 19 felony cases in 2017 with eight of them resulting in guilty pleas and seven still pending in court. The Officer of the Year award was implemented in 2015 by Schwertfeger in an effort to properly recognize the work of department officials.

“Corporal Safreed shows strong leadership every day by being who he is. He leads by example with his work ethic, positive attitude, dedication to the mission of the Wheeling Police Department. He epitomizes our core values such as integrity, professionalism, courage, respect, accountability, teamwork, leadership and service,” said Schwertfeger.

A command staff meeting is held each quarter of the calendar year to nominate an Officer of the Quarter. Those who are nominated and those who receive the award then qualify to receive the Officer of the Year Award.
