Body Of Missing Shadyside Man Is Found

The search for Troy DeLong ended Friday morning when his body was found in a wooded area near Shadyside.

Family, friends and law enforcement had been searching for the 46-year-old DeLong since Tuesday, after his family was unable to contact him beginning on the afternoon of April 7.

They filed a missing persons report with the Shadyside Police Department two days later. The search began in earnest when someone spotted his abandoned pick-up truck at Ohio River View Road and Big Pine Way, west of Shadyside, and reported the discovery to police.

Belmont County Sheriff David Lucas said members of the Tyler County Search and Rescue Team and a couple of search dogs entered a wooded area on a hillside opposite from the spot where the truck was found on Friday morning. At 10:03 a.m., the team reported finding a body.

Lucas said detectives from the county’s Major Crimes Unit responded to the discovery and confirmed the body was that of DeLong. Lucas said DeLong died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family in hopes that they can find closure,” Lucas said on behalf of the department.

Lucas added that many people and resources were dedicated to finding DeLong. He credited the Tyler County team for its efforts.

“I want to thank and appreciate everyone who assisted in the search … ,” he said, citing the Shadyside Police Department as the primary agency on the case, as well as the Ohio State Highway Patrol and other responders and volunteers.

“We put a lot of manpower and resources into this, but that’s our job,” Lucas continued.
